José Braulio Bedia Valdés was born in Havana, Cuba in 1959. He studied at the San Alejandro academy of arts and formed part of the first alumni from the recently established Superior Arts Institute (ISA) in Havana.
José Bedia es one of three protagonists from the renowned New Cuban Art Movement, a turning point in Cuban visual arts during the eighties as well as a new way of approaching art and its social role on the island.
Bedia’s work in influenced by his personal religious practise. The artist is initiated in the Order of Palo Monte. His work also extends into other spiritualities such as those from Central America. Bedia lives and works in Miami, where he has resided since 1993.
