Portuguese artist Rita GT is back in Luanda with a solo exhibition: Escola ao Lado (“School Next Door”). This travelling project was first shown in London (50 Golborne Gallery) and is now arriving in the Angolan capital.
Escola ao Lado will be composed of a series of itinerant lessons that simultaneously challenge and elicit learning schemes in the present vernacular. Under the curation of researcher Ana Cristina Cachola, the objective of this project is to deconstruct the hierarchies in the scholastic apparatus and question the rigidity of current models of knowledge production and circulation. Performative, expository, interventive: in “her” school, the participatory structure is horizontal, without the existence of hierarchies or fixed roles – knowledge constructs itself and is in the open.
Só Bumba Na Chicala will be the second lesson of the series, and, as has become customary with Rita GT, the exhibition counts on the collaboration of other artists – in this case, the informal school of Angolan artist Nelo Teixeira, the poet and writer José Luís Mendonça, the young artist Indira Grande, the Levarte movement, the social intervention group Jovem Mwangolê, among others.
The transformation of the Chicala 2 neighborhood, where Nelo Teixeira lives and works, the inheritance of the Axiluanda people, the public and private experience, a tribute to the informal art school “Só Bumba”, will be some of the questions highlighted in this series. As the curator Ana Cristina Cachola confirms, “In this school all voices are heard.”
Apart from the collection of works that were created during a residency in Chicala, the Só Bumba Na Chicala lesson will also include a diversified and unusual program of poetry, carpentry and Kuduro classes/performances.
The exhibition will open on November 23rd at 18:00 at MOVART.
