Gaby Messina

Gaby Messina is a visual artist and photographer born in Buenos Aires where she is still based. Her professional career began in the field of advertising, but she later decided to dedicate herself exclusively to photography, for which she trained with various professionals.

Messina’s work initially revolved around the use of photographs to channel the relationships she established with people and situations in her environment. Using video and photography, the Afro-Argentine artist is currently exploring her own position in the world. In her project Argentina Afro, Messina applies photographs and video recordings of Afro-Argentine descendants to question the notion of Argentina as a “white and European” country.

Her work has been shown in both solo- and group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (Medellin, Colombia), Mason Murer Gallery (Atlanta, USA), Recoleta Cultural Center (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Instituto Cervantes (Tokyo, Japan) and the Argentine Embassy (Maputo, Mozambique), among others. On several occasions, Messina has been selected for the City of Buenos Aires patronage program and has also been awarded a scholarship in visual arts from the National Fund for the Arts of Argentina. Some of her work have been acquired by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Buenos Aires), Museo de Arte Moderno (Buenos Aires) and the Museum of Latin American Art (Buenos Aires).
