Juana Valdés

Born in Pinar del Río (Cuba), Juana Valdés arrived in the United States in 1971. Through printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics and installations, this artist takes a critical approach to aspects related to transnationalism, gender, labor and class conflicts. Likewise, her work decodes and analyzes the migration experiences of Afro-Caribbean descendants.

Valdés studied sculpture at the Parsons School of Design (New York), holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (New York) and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (Madison, United States). She is currently an Associate Professor in the Art Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at numerous venues, including: Site Santa Fe, Perez Art Museum, El Museo del Barrio, NYC; P.S. 1 MOMA, NYC; MOCA, North Miami; Galerie Verein Berliner Künstler, Berlin; the Mason Gross Galleries at Rutgers University, NJ; Newark Museum, NJ; Galerie Binnen, Amsterdam and FreeSpace, Sydney.
