José Luis Macas is a visual artist, professor and researcher at the Catholic University of Ecuador and coordinator of Chawpi, a creative lab, workshop, and cultural space in Quito. He obtained a Master of Art in Public Space and Multimedia from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels. He is a member of the sound performance collective 0°1533 and a collaborator with the Kichwa Sumakruray artist collective. In 2018, he won first prize at the 10th SIARTE Art Biennial in Bolivia with the textile laboratory collective; participated in the 14th International Cuenca Biennial in Ecuador, and in 2010 in the 10th International Design Biennial in Saint Etienne, France. His work is focused on memory and the poetics of the landscape in relation to its geography, astronomy, and cultural history, linking indigenous ancestral knowledge and legacies with contemporary art.
