Kula 1 is a performance by Cuban-Angolan artist and C&AL contributor writer Sheila Ramirez. It is part of Convective Sequences, a group show curated by Colombian artistic producer and researcher Mar Vallejo, which also features works by Chilean artist Catalina González, Portuguese sculptor Beatriz Moura.
Invitation from the artist
“In Kula 1 I perform for 1 and a half hours. I cover my body with clay as I chant a labor chant. I have an empty space next to me so anybody from the audience can sit there, and tell me about their day while removing the clay from my skin. As you finish, I dry your hands. And this continues in a repetitive act of layering and removing clay. You can observe this, or you can take active participation. This space is for you. To come closer to me, to presence, and the shared cleansing of your daily experience.”
