Curated by Austria Ulloa, Raíces y renacimiento: Mujeres Dominicanas en el Arte (Roots and Rebirth: Dominican Women in Art) brings to Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture works by 22 Dominican women artists. Through painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media, the artists bridge cultural heritage with contemporary expression, reinterpreting tradition while embracing new creative directions. Their works engage with themes of memory, identity, and transformation, drawing from Dominican folklore, Afro-Caribbean spirituality, and the experiences of migration and diaspora.
“This exhibition underscores the power of Dominican women’s voices in contemporary art. Their work is a testament to the resilience of cultural identity and the endless possibilities of artistic reinvention,” says Austria Ulloa.
