Ícaro Lira

With a practice that mixes archival work among documentary narrative and fiction, artist Ícaro Lira, born in Fortaleza in 1986, has distinguished himself by looking at themes of Brazilian history and more contemporary political issues, such as immigration. He is represented by the Jaqueline Martins gallery, where he is holding the solo show Frente de Trabalho (“Labor Front”). As in previous exhibitions, he has created structures within the exhibition that explore the idea of a living archive, with materials collected in their movements and paths, presented as new museological devices.

His work is also born of collaborative practices, such as the “Museu do Estrangeiro” (“Foreigners Museum”) project, at the most recent 20th Sesc_Videobrasil Contemporary Art Festival at SESC Pompeia. He has participated in solo exhibitions at the Paço das Artes (São Paulo), Oswald de Andrade Cultural Center (São Paulo), Banco do Nordeste Cultural Center (Fortaleza, Ceará) and SESC (Crato, Ceará), among others. He was awarded the IPHAN (National Institute of Historic and Art Heritage) Art and Heritage Honor Prize in 2013; participated in the 3rd Biennial of Bahia with his work “Desterro, Expedição Etnográfica de Ficção”(“Banishment, Ethnographic Expedition of Fiction”) in 2014; and the Rumos Itaú Cultural with the project “Expedição catástrofe: por uma arqueologia da ignorância” (“Expedition catastrophe: for an archaeology of ignorance”) in 2016. He has participated in artist residencies in places such as Capacete (Rio de Janeiro), Terra UNA (Minas Gerais), Instituto Sacatar (Bahia), Red Bull Station (São Paulo), LA ENE (Buenos Aires) and Associazione Culturale MT Alves and Jimmie Durham (Naples).
