Sandra Monterroso is a Guatemalan conceptual artist born in 1974 whose mediums include video, performance, installation and sculpture. Monterroso’s projects consider three conceptual axes: the materiality of the medium – she is particularly interested in natural resources and women’s artisanal practices of her Q’eqchi community’s Maya culture–, a connection with spirituality and ancestry, and the history of coloniality in Mesoamerica, from a female perspective.
Monterroso’s work has been exhibited in Guatemala, Mexico DF, Vienna, Quebec, Bogotá, Houston, and Naples amongst others. She has pieces in the collections of Museum Reina Sofia in Spain, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Costa Rica, Fundación Paiz para el Arte y la Cultura, Guatemala, and University of Essex in the United Kingdom amongst others.
