The Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (born in 1902 in Sagua la Grande, Las Villas 1902, died in Paris 1982) is considered the most internationally renowned painter of Cuba. With a production that traverses different aesthetic currents, he is known as one of the most prominent surrealist artist in Latin America. However, he always brought elements of the African mother culture into his work in the form of a recurring element of Afro-Cuban myth and legends, where the representation of the Orishas, from their pictorial technique serve as manifests of social criticism and poetry. Parts of his work are found in renowned museums and private collections all over the world.
