Acervo África

Opened in 2012, this research and exhibition space comprises roughly 1500 pieces, such as handmade fabrics of the Kuba (Congo), Ashanti (Ghana) and Dogon (Mali) peoples. Most of the items were brought from the African continent by historian Daniela Moreau, the collection’s coordinator and sponsor. According to the institution, the idea is to “work together to expand public understanding of African material culture and its appreciation as a founding legacy for the Brazilian experience.”

The site also has a library of over 500 titles, including books, periodicals and theses on African art and culture, as well as a catalog of 200 films, most of them by filmmakers from the African continent. There is also an image bank with photographs available to view online.
