The Arturos Quilombola Community, created in the 19th century and one of the most important symbols of the resistance of black culture in Minas Gerais, currently brings together about 500 descendants (and their family members) of Arthur Camilo Silvério, the son of slaves, and his wife Carmelinda Maria da Silva, on a rural property located in the city of Contagem, near the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Throughout the year various Afro-Brazilian cultural and religious demonstrations are held in the space, all linked to the Congado, an Afro-Brazilian celebration. For musicologist Glaura Lucas, the rituals that take place there are considered performances due to aspects such as chanted songs, the rhythm of the beat of the drums and the bodily movement of the congadeiros (dancers).
