Fundação Pierre Verger

At the end of the 1980s, inspired by his great admiration for Bahia and the Bight of Benin, Pierre Verger (1902-1996) created this Salvador foundation that bears his name. In the words of the French photographer and anthropologist who settled in Brazil in 1946, the foundation was born with the goal of “highlighting this common heritage, offering Bahia what it knows about Benin and Nigeria and informing these countries about their cultural influences on Bahia”.

One branch of this mission is the gallery, located in Salvador’s historic city center. Since 2005, the space has held temporary exhibitions with photographs by Verger, who took more than 62,000 negatives, many of them about Afro-Brazilian culture and his travels around the African continent. In addition to the exhibition area, there is also a gift shop where you can buy books and T-shirts, among other items.
