El primer Programa de Afrodescendencia y Racialidad se estrenará en agosto de 2021 en la Facultad de Estudios Generales del Recinto de Río Piedras de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, gracias a una subvención de $700,000 que otorgará durante tres años la Mellon Foundation. La escritora puertorriqueña Mayra Santos-Febres será la coordinadora de este programa que contará con diez profesores y profesoras.
“Lo que se está haciendo es dar el apoyo económico que se necesitaba primero para pagarle a un equipo de diez profesores que está trabajando y que siempre ha estado trabajando con este tipo de cosa y además de eso para crear el programa de la concentración menor transdisciplinaria, es decir, que puedes estar en cualquier departamento de la Universidad de Puerto Rico y tener una concentración menor en estudios de afrodescendencia y raza. Además de eso, vamos encaminados hacia una concentración mayor que se pueda hacer un bachillerato, maestría y doctorado, que es el próximo paso”, sostiene.
Este programa pretende, entre otras cosas, generar investigaciones, así como estadísticas que ayuden a medir el impacto de las políticas públicas en la población afropuertorriqueña y ayuden a generar nuevas medidas. Como recuerda Santos-Febres, en Puerto Rico la variable raza no se utiliza, por lo que se desconoce, por ejemplo, cuántas mujeres negras son víctimas de violencia doméstica. Santos-Febres atribuye esta invisibilidad racial al discurso del mestizaje, tan enraizado en nuestra cultura.
La meta de la profesora es que este proyecto académico se pueda acoger en los once recintos de la UPR, pero por el momento solo estará operando en Río Piedras. La subvención de la Mellon Foundation, por otro lado, apoyará la celebración del Tercer Congreso Internacional en Afrodescendencia en Puerto Rico en octubre del 2021, que será auspiciado y respaldado por el programa.
