An institution of the Secretary of Culture of the State of Bahia, the Pedro Calmon Foundation coordinates the State Public Archives and the State Public Library System. In addition, the institution supports and promotes activities such as seminars and exhibitions on African and Afro-Brazilian culture. One example is “Journey to Timbuktu – From the coast of Guinea to the shores of the Sahara in 1906”, an exhibition held in 2016 at the State of Bahia’s Central Library, with photographs by French photographer Edmond Fortier, who produced more than 4,000 printed records of West Africa at the turn of the 20th century.
