Wageningen University & Research (WUR) invites applications for three fully funded PhD positions within the ERC-funded project FRICTIONS. This interdisciplinary research explores how tourism influences cultural memory related to slavery and colonial heritage across diverse locations. Candidates will focus on one of three case studies: 1) Ghana-Suriname-Netherlands, 2) Angola-Brazil-Portugal, or 3) Namibia-Brazil-Germany, with fieldwork and collaborative research integrated across the team.
Candidate Profile: Applicants should hold an MA/MSc in social sciences or humanities (e.g., geography, tourism studies, anthropology, cultural studies, etc.). They should demonstrate relevant fieldwork experience, proficiency in innovative qualitative methods, strong analytical and writing skills, and advanced English (C1). Familiarity with languages relevant to the case study (Dutch, Portuguese, or German) is preferred. Candidates currently completing their Master’s may also apply, with degree verification assessed by NUFFIC.
Responsibilities: – Conduct fieldwork (up to nine months) in designated locations. – Produce a PhD thesis and participate in project events, workshops, and conferences. – Help establish a project database and assist with academic events and occasional teaching.
Offer: WUR provides a four-year, full-time position with a competitive salary (€2,872 to €3,670 monthly) and benefits, including partial parental leave, campus sports access, and a December bonus. International candidates receive support with visa and relocation processes.
