EFIE. The Museum as Home presents historical and contemporary art from Ghana: video works and multimedia installations. Works by Afroscope, Diego Araúja, Rita Mawuena Benissan, Kwasi Darko, Kuukua Eshun, Na Chainkua Reindorf, El Anatsui and Studio Nyali. The exhibition was conceived by art historian, author and filmmaker Nana Oforiatta Ayim.
These works by contemporary artists are combined with historical artifacts on loan from several German museums. The exhibition expands the traditional understanding of the institution “museum”, questions traditional forms of presentation and offers new perspectives – on the art, but also on the reality from which they originate. Whereas the works of artists from Ghana are centered, Diego Aráuja’s work contributes to an ongoing dialogue with one of Ghana’s diasporas, Brazil
The exhibition architecture of EFIE. The Museum as Home. Art from Ghana in the Dortmunder U directly references the Mobile Museum. Efie means “home” in the Akan languages. The architect DK Osseo-Asare, who also designed the first Mobile Museum for ANO, developed a modular bamboo structure for the Dortmunder U within the exhibition space. He calls it Fufuzela. It not only houses the artworks, but also connects them to each other. This museum is therefore not bordered by concrete, but consists of a network of movable structures in which the artworks are at home. “If you understand the museum and the works housed in it as part of yourself, not as a space with its own codes and purposes, you develop completely different feelings towards the works”, says Ayim.
