A Decade of C&: Reflecting and Connecting Art from Africa and the Diaspora

In 2013, Contemporary And (C&) was born from an idea, a website, and a mission: to spotlight contemporary artistic productions and their connections to Africa and the global Diaspora. We aimed to create a digital platform for discussions around visual art from these regions, linking creative practices worldwide and moving beyond traditional centers and singular histories.

C& Magazine’s first print issue in 2014, focusing on the Dakar Biennale, marked a milestone. Holding the physical magazine and sharing it at our beach party was a proud moment. Subsequent issues covered major art events like Kampala’s art festival, Bamako Encounters, and documenta 14. In 2016, we launched an issue in São Paulo during the Biennial, leading to C& América Latina Magazine (C& AL), which focuses on Afro- and Indigenous perspectives connecting Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa. Over the past five years, C& AL has become one of the most important zines discussing contemporary arts in these regions.

We’ve always aimed to create Special Issues that break our editorial routine, involving various partners. Notable examples include the September 2017 issue from our C& Critical Writing Workshop in Nairobi, and a multilingual issue featuring texts in five languages, including Arabic. Last year, we produced our first C& and C& AL collaborative issue in seven languages, including two indigenous ones—a true gem!

With our small, powerful team, we’ve created a platform like no other: a space of constellations, of intimacies, of connections – an expanded universe, a locus of wisdom, a cultural beacon.

Thank you most of all to the C& contributors – the writers, artists, and cultural producers – who define the magazines and the spirit and heart of C&.

As we look out toward the dazzling horizon of another decade, we are energized by the future and getting there together. C& will keep changing its shape, formulated and formed by the many voices that carry and manifest it.

The content of this box reflects a journey through the past decade: a collection of all C& América Latina Magazine and C& Magazine print issues. It’s a treasure trove of tales and theses – read, enjoy, repeat, and pass them on and around.
