The drawings of Tony Cruz Pabón go beyond the mere action of measuring objects or the distance between two points. They are a different way of shaping day to day. In Drawings of Distances (2003-present) the artist draws lines representing the kilometers that separate San Juan – his hometown – from the place where the exhibition will open. The result are geometric images drawn on the walls, which look for the viewer to feel the concept of distance and the impossibility of representing it when it comes to thousands of kilometers.
Cruz Pabón was born in Puerto Rico in 1977 and still lives on the island. He studied at the School of Plastic Arts of Puerto Rico, and did a PhD in research and artistic practices at the University of Castilla La Mancha in Spain. In 2009, he helped create Beta-Local, an organization dedicated to promoting arts and critical discourse on the island.
His work has been exhibited at renowned galleries around the world: Glasgow, Sao Paulo, London and, Bogotá. In 2018 Cruz Pabón will participate at the X Berlin Biennial.
